Overview
Attending a craft show for the first time is exciting — and a little overwhelming. There are dozens of booths, lots of people, and more great products than you expected. This guide walks you through the whole experience so you arrive confident and leave happy.
Step 1: Research the Show in Advance
Find the show details on Craftshow Events or the organizer's website. Look for:
- Show hours — arrive when doors open for best selection
- Entry fee — most craft shows are free; some charge $1–$5 for charity
- Location and parking — know where to park before you go
- Event type — is it indoor, outdoor, juried, or themed?
Step 2: Prepare What to Bring
Pack the night before. Bring:
- Cash ($20–$60 in small bills) plus a card
- Reusable tote bags (2–3 is ideal)
- Comfortable shoes — you'll walk on concrete or grass for hours
- A list of people you're shopping for (birthdays, holidays, etc.)
- Sunscreen and a hat if it's an outdoor summer show
- Layers if it's a cool-season outdoor show
Step 3: Arrive and Orient Yourself
Walk in without buying anything for the first 15 minutes. Find a show map if one is available. Locate:
- The perimeter of the show (so you know where it ends)
- Restrooms and water stations
- Food vendors (you'll want to know for later)
- Any booths that immediately catch your eye — note them to return to
Step 4: Do a Full Walk-Through First
Before purchasing anything, walk the entire show. This is the most important step. It prevents you from spending your budget early and missing something even better a few booths ahead.
Use your phone notes to bookmark booths you want to revisit. Or just remember to loop back.
Step 5: Engage With Vendors
When a booth catches your eye, step in and say hello. Ask the vendor about their work. Common conversation starters:
- "Tell me about how you make these."
- "Is this all you, or do you have a team?"
- "How long have you been doing this?"
Vendors love talking about their craft. You'll learn things that make your purchase more meaningful.
Step 6: Shop Thoughtfully
Return to your favorite booths and make your purchases. Before you leave a booth you love:
- Pick up a business card
- Ask if they have an email list or social media
- Ask where they'll be next
Step 7: Take a Food and Rest Break
Craft shows are marathons, not sprints. Grab food from a food vendor or nearby restaurant. Rest your feet. Revisit your mental list of booths and decide on final purchases.
Step 8: Leave Time for Impulse Finds
The last half hour of your visit is for wandering without a plan. Some of the best finds happen when you're not looking.
Step 9: After the Show
Follow your favorite vendors on social media. You've invested time discovering these makers — stay connected so you hear about their next show, new collections, and online shops.
